March 2015

March is wrapping up and that means we've been in Central Asia for five months.  This month was filled with language learning (or lack thereof), meeting with friends, making new acquaintances, work with Jeremy's business, a trip to the mountains for a couple of days of rest (learning to ski), Jeremy going to another city for a couple of days with some men and a refreshed focus for me after listening to an audiobook among many other things...on to some photos :)
This family is very dear and special to us.  They are spending a month in another city and we miss them dearly. We are thankful for technology that allows us to send and receive pictures and messages to and from them

William and Kaitlynn playing ambulance...these guys are out rescuing folks while I'm just doing laundry or something, go figure :)

We were blessed to visit the mountains about two hours away and have our breath taken away by His handiwork!

The view from our window.  We were the only guests at the hotel and enjoyed a quiet two night stay.

William's first day of local preschool. He had a wonderful transition starting "school" and is making friends and figuring out what people are saying around him in their language. He is really enjoying it and is even eating the snack they offer in the morning now.

As we were walking somewhere, they grabbed hands and William said "Daddy hold my hand too.  We is a family now."

While William is at "school", Kaitlynn and I have been able to go to the playground and chat with new friends a couple of times.  We are enjoying the spring weather and that more people are out and about to meet!

One morning when Kaitlynn picked her own dress out right as Spring had officially begun.  As you can see, she is happy about it :)

A precious friend of mine who is learning to make the national dish, osh. It turned out delicious!! Can't wait for her to teach me soon!

Fun playing in the snow at the mountains

The view I had from laying on the snow...reminded me of many days spent laying on the Georgia grass and was a sweet breath of fresh air for me!

Watching folks learn to ski, tube, and have fun in the snow

A polaris for snow, in a Central Asia village area...surprised me!

Jeremy had been skiing once before coming to the mountains this time.  However, he had never been skiing quite like he did this time! This man is the one olympic skier from Uzbekistan.  He was in the Olympics in 2006 and boy are we thankful he is the one who took Jeremy to the top of the mountain...apparently the guys thought Jeremy had more expertise than he actually had because...he was taken to the very top of a mountain to a very steep part.  After he slid on his butt down a quarter of the mountain, this man, about 5 foot 5-7inches tall and weighing not more than 140 pound fully clothed, decided that it would be safe for Jeremy to ride down the mountain ON HIS BACK. The man was on skis with no poles with Jeremy riding piggy back style on his back. They went down another quarter of the mountain like that until the steepness of the slope was more safe for Jeremy and he helped him ski down the rest himself....all of this is happening in another language! Jeremy ends up with amazing experiences lol! We are thankful to God for this man being the one who helped get my husband down the mountain with no injuries!

"What's cooking round here" March 2015

This is a local dish called somsa.  It is a flaky crusty pocket filled with meat and onions and seasoned with cumin and salt and it absolutely delicious.  The outside is brushed with egg yolk to brown just right. These are cooked in the oven. Many locals put different yummy combinations inside such as pumpkin or potatoe. I can't really give you a recipe for this one because every local makes it just a bit different (like all their recipes lol).  The wonderful lady who taught me to make these uses a frozen dough instead of making her own and so that's what I do.  She taught me how to make beautiful somsa and to our family, she has the best combination of ingredients :) thus her somsa are the best around!
